The global coworking community

The global coworking community

As I’m sure I’ve mentioned, I have regularly follow the Coworking Google group. It’s a great resource for anyone who runs a coworking space, is thinking of running a coworking space, coworks, wants to, or just likes the idea. Recently, the group was presented with this offer: Buy the top level domain coworking.com. Since then, the coworking community has been a buzz with fervor, excitement, and all sorts of things. It’s been pretty exciting to watch. Alex Hillman of IndyHall has posted a pretty cool blog about the whole thing. He really was the guy who spearheaded the effort, and deserves proper credit for his part in things.

As a bit of a spoiler, the domain was acquired and in the process more money was raised than was needed. This presents the global community with a conundrum and a situation it’s not been in before. While I personally will make no claims or predictions as to the way things might unfold, I will say that not only the acquisition of the domain but the situation as it has erupted smell just a bit of a new level for the coworking movement. Up until this point there’s been plenty of conversation about “What is coworking?”, “How can we improve communication?”, “What can we do to bring spaces together?”, etc, but up until this point hearsay has been able to be hearsay. Now, there’s something in the middle of it all. The catalytic event has occurred, and it’s time to watch things play out to see where they go. It’s quite an interesting spectacle to observe, and as this new evolution continues, will hopefully be something that we here at Company|Dallas can be a part of.
